Should you draft Mike Evans in 2026?

The volume held. The finishing did not. Whether 2024 was the player breaking or the situation breaking decides what he is worth at 70.9 overall.

Mike Evans scored 84.8 fantasy points in 2024. The volume he earned was worth 105.9 — he finished 21.1 points BELOW what his own usage justified. That is a different problem from losing the job, and it is the single most important thing to understand before drafting him at 70.9 overall.

What actually happened in 2024

He finished 10.6 points per game on 62 targets — down 39.5% from his 2024 rate with TB. Every part of that is real and none of it is in dispute.

What is worth separating is how much of it he earned. Expected points strip out the finishing and ask a narrower question: given the targets he drew, where they came from on the field, and how far downfield they travelled, what was that usage worth? For 2024 the answer was 105.9 points — 13.2 per game. He scored 21.1 FEWER than that, a 19.9% shortfall.

The expected line underneath the season was 74.8 catches for 949 yards and 6.3 touchdowns — and he came in under it.

The miss was receiving yards, and almost nothing else

The expected line was 74.8 catches for 949 yards and 6.3 touchdowns. He finished with 30, 368 and 3.

47% of the entire shortfall came from receiving yards alone. He hit 40% of his expected catches and 48% of his expected touchdowns — and 39% of his expected receiving yards.

That distinction matters more than the raw finish. A player who loses his role posts a low score and a low expected score. Mike Evans posted a low score on an expected total of 105.9 — 13.2 points a game of earned opportunity. The targets were still coming. What went wrong happened after the ball was in the air.

The season was three games

3 of his 14 games produced 25 or more points: Week 13 against CAR (25.8), Week 15 against LAC (36.9), Week 17 against CAR (29.7). Strip them and the remaining 11 games average 13.5.

Spike weeks win fantasy games and a player who produces them is more valuable than one who never does — he is a ceiling play with real weeks off. 4 games came in under 10 points, including Week 2 against DET (7.2) and Week 3 against DEN (3.7).

The three largest overshoots — Week 15 (+17.4), Week 17 (+13.8), Week 1 (+12.5) — are the same games. The spikes were not extra volume. They were finishing.

Four seasons, actual against expected. Two of the four came in meaningfully above what the volume justified.

2 of his 6 seasons ran hot: 2020 (+23.6%), 2023 (+19.7%). 1 came in below what the usage justified: 2025 (-19.9%). Across all 6 he has scored 220.1 points more than his usage was worth.

The reflexive read on a down year is decline. But the direction of the miss matters: finishing BELOW expectation is the more correctable of the two errors, because the hard part — earning the volume — is the part that held.

But an expected-points model has a specific blind spot, and it is worth naming: it converts usage at league-average rates. A target twenty yards downfield is worth what the average receiver does with a target twenty yards downfield. If a player is reliably better than average at winning a particular kind of target, he will beat the model every single year, and calling that luck is just mislabelling a skill.

So the question is not whether he missed the number. It is whether there is a mechanism.

There is a mechanism, and it is man coverage

What he does against each coverage, 476 targets over four seasons. Cover 1 is single-high man — the look he sees most and punishes hardest. Cover 0 and Cover 6 are the two he cannot solve.

Across 476 targets and four seasons, he has been a fundamentally different receiver depending on what the defence played. Against man he has caught 63.4% for 8.1 yards per target and 0.423 expected points added per target. Against zone: 56.9%, 9.02 yards, 0.199 EPA.

That is a gap of 0.223 EPA per target on a sample of 213 man targets against 260 zone. The catch rate goes the other way — he catches more against zone — which is exactly what you would expect from a receiver whose value is in winning contested downfield throws rather than in finding soft spots underneath.

The shell detail sharpens it. Cover 1, single-high man is the look he has faced most: 171 targets, 8.75 yards per target, 0.443 EPA. His best is Cover 0, all-out pressure with no safety help at 0.468 on 26 targets.

The weakness is specific. Against Cover 6 he has caught 50% for 3.3 yards a target and -0.493 EPA across 20 looks — a gap of 1 expected points a target between his best coverage and his worst.

This does not prove the overshoot repeats. It does mean the pattern has a stated cause rather than being a coin that keeps landing heads.

The market has had him right, and he keeps missing

Across 40 graded prop lines, he has gone over 45.0% of the time. On receiving yards specifically the number is 35.0% across 20 lines, missing the posted number by an average of 0.5%.

That cuts against him. A book that has him beaten 65% of the time on his most-graded market is not a market being slow — it is a market that has him priced correctly and a player who keeps falling short of it.

Touchdowns are the control. His anytime-TD market implied a 46.7% rate and he converted at 45.0% — a gap of -1.7 points, which is noise.

So the risk is not efficiency. It is targets.

San Francisco returns 5 of 6 continuity slots — qb1, rb1, te1, hc, oc — with Brock Purdy at quarterback, Kyle Shanahan as head coach and Klay Kubiak calling it. The offence projects to 33.65 pass attempts a game at high confidence.

The pie is stable. His slice is the question. Our share model has him at 11.8% against the 25.8% he ran, with a range of 6.2% to 17.6%.

That number is built from 25 comparable players — same age band, same prior share, same team, same coordinator — not from a depth chart. The closest three went Mike Evans 24.8% to 24.3%, Mike Evans 22.3% to 26.1%, Julian Edelman 27.3% to 0%. Two held, one fell hard.

The numbers that carry, and the ones that do not

Across 4,488 player-seasons we swept every stat for whether it predicts NEXT year's points, and kept only the ones that replicated in all five. target share (r 0.247), WOPR (r 0.218), air-yards share (r 0.142) carry. receiving EPA per game (r -0.127) and yards per target (r -0.114) and week-to-week volatility (r -0.075) run negative — a player who was hyper-efficient on low volume tends to come back down, so a gaudy per-touch number is a warning rather than a selling point.

So the figures worth weighing for him: a 24.3% target share, 34.8% of the air yards, a WOPR of 0.61, on the field for 65.6% of snaps. He averaged 2 yards of separation against 6.7 yards of cushion, and lost 0.4 yards after the catch above expectation. He finished 78 at the position — WR5+.

The offence he plays in

Vegas sets an implied total for every team every week, and some offences beat theirs systematically. Over 112 games, SF has come in +0.57 points against its own implied total, clearing it in 48% of weeks.

That is close to neutral — the offence performs about where the market expects, so there is no environment bonus or penalty to apply to him either way.

One related finding worth carrying: across 1,280 cases we measured what happens after a team's implied total slides, and the correlation is -0.37 — negative, meaning the market over-corrects. A falling team total is more often a buying window than a warning.

Our board has him at 208 points, 12.7 per game across 16.4 expected games — 64.7 catches, 893 yards, 9 touchdowns. That is WR3, 48 overall, and 51 points of value over a replacement starter.

It is a step down from 2024, and the reason is volume rather than efficiency. The projection assumes he keeps doing what he does on slightly fewer looks.

What we have been saying about him

turning 33 is real, but he's cleared 11+ TDs in 4 of the last 5 healthy seasons and remains one of the best red-zone/contested-catch options in the league by reputation and usage. Read is the new OC specifically wanted to replicate a rival OC's concentrated-red-zone-role treatment of their own aging alpha WR, and brought Evans in specifically to fill that exact role regardless of age.

That is the current read. It is a change — in 2026-08 the position was BUY: much better in full PPR/TD-equity context, 12-15 TD range plausible even without 100 receptions…

Where to draft him

The books do not agree on him. Mike Evans is a board split: Underdog takes him ~49, ESPN lets him slide to ~96 (37.9-pick gap). That 37.9-pick gap between Underdog and ESPN is the practical thing to act on: in a ESPN-priced room he is available later than his consensus number suggests.

He goes at 70.9 overall on consensus, and the books are far apart — 37.9 picks between cheapest and priciest, which is a real value window. He is latest on espn and earliest on underdog: sleeper 57.8, espn 95.7, yahoo 65.6, underdog 48.8, cbs 64.3.

At 70.9 you are paying a WR2 price for a player whose median outcome is a WR2 season with five weeks that win you the game outright and four that lose it. The bust rate of 27% is real and so is the 47% boom rate.

The call: fair value, not a discount. The reason to take him is the ceiling and the betting record. The reason to pass is that you are buying a profile that has beaten its expected output four years running and only needs to stop once.
