Should you draft Justin Jefferson in 2026?

The volume held. The finishing did not. Whether 2025 was the player breaking or the situation breaking decides what he is worth at 13.2 overall.

Justin Jefferson scored 201.5 fantasy points in 2025. The volume he earned was worth 240.8 — he finished 39.3 points BELOW what his own usage justified. That is a different problem from losing the job, and it is the single most important thing to understand before drafting him at 13.2 overall.

The week it changed

Rather than reading a season average, it is worth finding the point the season actually turned. Our shift detector flags in-season changes large enough to clear a statistical threshold, then asks what moved around them.

The largest single move was Week 16: target share went up from 29.6 to 35.7, a 20.7% change, at 3.62 standard deviations. The cause was structural — targets were redistributed inside the offence. He also missed Week 6.

Year over year the engine classifies 2025 as a role that shrank. That is the label to carry into the projection, because it separates a player who lost snaps from one who kept them and converted worse.

What actually happened in 2025

He finished 11.85 points per game on 141 targets — down 35% from his 2024 rate with MIN. Every part of that is real and none of it is in dispute.

What is worth separating is how much of it he earned. Expected points strip out the finishing and ask a narrower question: given the targets he drew, where they came from on the field, and how far downfield they travelled, what was that usage worth? For 2025 the answer was 240.8 points — 14.2 per game. He scored 39.3 FEWER than that, a 16.3% shortfall.

The expected line underneath the season was 87.7 catches for 1110 yards and 7 touchdowns — and he came in under it.

The miss was touchdowns, and almost nothing else

The expected line was 87.7 catches for 1110 yards and 7 touchdowns. He finished with 84, 1048 and 2.

75% of the entire shortfall came from touchdowns alone. He hit 96% of his expected catches and 94% of his expected receiving yards — and 29% of his expected touchdowns.

That matters because touchdowns are the least repeatable part of a receiving line. Volume and yards reflect a role; touchdowns reflect a role plus a quarterback putting the ball where it can be caught in a nine-yard window. A player who holds his catches and yards while losing five touchdowns has not lost his job — he has lost the coin flips.

That distinction matters more than the raw finish. A player who loses his role posts a low score and a low expected score. Justin Jefferson posted a low score on an expected total of 240.8 — 14.2 points a game of earned opportunity. The targets were still coming. What went wrong happened after the ball was in the air.

Every week of 2025, what he was worth against what he scored. Expected points come from the volume he actually earned — targets, air yards, and where on the field they came. He cleared it in 7 of 17 games.

There were no spike weeks

Not one of his 17 games cleared 25 points. His best was 22.6 in Week 4. For a player who had cleared it routinely before 2025, that is the clearest single symptom of the year — not a change in what he was asked to do, a change in what came of it.

A steady floor has its own value, but this was not a floor season by choice. 6 games came in under 10 points, including Week 10 against BAL (7.7) and Week 12 against GB (8.8).

The three largest overshoots — Week 4 (+3.8), Week 1 (+2.8), Week 9 (+1.3) — are the same games. The spikes were not extra volume. They were finishing.

Four seasons, actual against expected. Two of the four came in meaningfully above what the volume justified.

The reflexive read on a down year is decline. But the direction of the miss matters: finishing BELOW expectation is the more correctable of the two errors, because the hard part — earning the volume — is the part that held.

But an expected-points model has a specific blind spot, and it is worth naming: it converts usage at league-average rates. A target twenty yards downfield is worth what the average receiver does with a target twenty yards downfield. If a player is reliably better than average at winning a particular kind of target, he will beat the model every single year, and calling that luck is just mislabelling a skill.

So the question is not whether he missed the number. It is whether there is a mechanism.

What the coverage data says

What he does against each coverage, 599 targets over four seasons. Cover 1 is single-high man — the look he sees most and punishes hardest. Cover 0 and Cover 6 are the two he cannot solve.

Across 599 targets and four seasons, he has been a fundamentally different receiver depending on what the defence played. Against man he has caught 54.6% for 9.32 yards per target and 0.28 expected points added per target. Against zone: 73.2%, 9.34 yards, 0.272 EPA.

That is a gap of 0.008 EPA per target on a sample of 229 man targets against 369 zone. The catch rate goes the other way — he catches more against zone — which is exactly what you would expect from a receiver whose value is in winning contested downfield throws rather than in finding soft spots underneath.

The shell detail sharpens it. Cover 1, single-high man is the look he has faced most: 164 targets, 10.08 yards per target, 0.417 EPA. That is his best number against his largest sample, which is the opposite of a fluke.

The weakness is specific. Against Cover 0, all-out pressure with no safety help he has caught 33.3% for 6.85 yards a target and -0.374 EPA across 27 looks — a gap of 0.8 expected points a target between his best coverage and his worst.

This does not prove the overshoot repeats. It does mean the pattern has a stated cause rather than being a coin that keeps landing heads.

The market has him fairly priced

Across 64 graded prop lines, he has gone over 48.4% of the time. On receiving yards specifically the number is 43.8% across 32 lines, missing the posted number by an average of 3.5%.

That is close enough to a coin flip that the market has him fairly priced on his primary market. There is no edge to claim in either direction.

Touchdowns are the control. His anytime-TD market implied a 46.8% rate and he converted at 31.3% — a gap of -15.5 points, which is worth noting.

So the risk is not efficiency. It is targets.

Minnesota returns 5 of 6 continuity slots — wr1, rb1, te1, hc, oc — with Kyler Murray at quarterback, Kevin O'Connell as head coach and Wes Phillips calling it. The offence projects to 32.63 pass attempts a game at medium confidence.

The pie is stable. His slice is the question. Our share model has him at 26.5% against the 29.9% he ran, with a range of 24.7% to 29.7%.

That number is built from 29 comparable players — same age band, same prior share, same team, same coordinator — not from a depth chart. The closest three went Odell Beckham 28.2% to 18.2%, D.J. Moore 29.1% to 27.1%, D.J. Moore 27.1% to 28.8%. Two held, one fell hard.

The numbers that carry, and the ones that do not

Across 4,488 player-seasons we swept every stat for whether it predicts NEXT year's points, and kept only the ones that replicated in all five. target share (r 0.247), WOPR (r 0.218), air-yards share (r 0.142) carry. receiving EPA per game (r -0.127) and yards per target (r -0.114) and week-to-week volatility (r -0.075) run negative — a player who was hyper-efficient on low volume tends to come back down, so a gaudy per-touch number is a warning rather than a selling point.

So the figures worth weighing for him: a 30.7% target share, 40.1% of the air yards, a WOPR of 0.74, on the field for 94.2% of snaps. He averaged 4.03 yards of separation against 7.39 yards of cushion, and gained 1.12 yards after the catch above expectation. He finished 23 at the position — WR2.

The offence he plays in

Vegas sets an implied total for every team every week, and some offences beat theirs systematically. Over 103 games, MIN has come in +0.13 points against its own implied total, clearing it in 53% of weeks.

That is close to neutral — the offence performs about where the market expects, so there is no environment bonus or penalty to apply to him either way.

One related finding worth carrying: across 1,280 cases we measured what happens after a team's implied total slides, and the correlation is -0.37 — negative, meaning the market over-corrects. A falling team total is more often a buying window than a warning.

Our board has him at 275.9 points, 16.8 per game across 16.4 expected games — 92.8 catches, 1312 yards, 8.3 touchdowns. That is WR1, 9 overall, and 119 points of value over a replacement starter.

It is a step down from 2025, and the reason is volume rather than efficiency. The projection assumes he keeps doing what he does on slightly fewer looks.

What we have been saying about him

no WR was more unlucky on touchdowns last year: tied for 8th with 10 red- zone targets inside the 10, caught only 1 (29% catch rate there, 3rd-worst among 10+-target players) — read as a QB accuracy issue (McCarthy/Brosmer), not a Jefferson issue, since we know he can catch. Held the all-time receiving-yards/game record before Puka broke it. A real bounce-back is expected purely from the QB upgrade to Kyler Murray.

Where to draft him

The books do not agree on him. Justin Jefferson is a board split: Underdog takes him ~10, CBS lets him slide to ~16 (3.9-pick gap). That 3.9-pick gap between Underdog and CBS is the practical thing to act on: in a CBS-priced room he is available later than his consensus number suggests.

He goes at 13.2 overall on consensus, with a 3.9-pick spread between cheapest and priciest. He is latest on cbs and earliest on underdog: sleeper 12.4, espn 12.1, yahoo 12.2, underdog 10.4, cbs 16.

At 13.2 you are paying a WR2 price for a player whose median outcome is a WR2 season with five weeks that win you the game outright and four that lose it. The bust rate of 17% is real and so is the 39% boom rate.

The call: fair value, not a discount. The reason to take him is the ceiling and the betting record. The reason to pass is that you are buying a profile that has beaten its expected output four years running and only needs to stop once.
