Should you draft George Pickens in 2026?

He has beaten his expected points in 2 of 4 seasons. Whether that is a skill or a countdown decides what he is worth at 24 overall.

George Pickens scored 291.9 fantasy points in 2025. The volume he earned was worth 233.9. That gap of 58 points is the single most important thing to understand before drafting him at 24 overall.

What actually happened in 2025

He finished 17.17 points per game on 137 targets — a 39.9% jump on his 2024 rate with PIT. Every part of that is real and none of it is in dispute.

What is worth separating is how much of it he earned. Expected points strip out the finishing and ask a narrower question: given the targets he drew, where they came from on the field, and how far downfield they travelled, what was that usage worth? For 2025 the answer was 233.9 points — 13.8 per game. He scored 58 more than that, a 24.8% overshoot.

The expected line underneath the season was 85.2 catches for 1078 yards and 6.8 touchdowns. He beat all three.

Every week of 2025, what he was worth against what he scored. Expected points come from the volume he actually earned — targets, air yards, and where on the field they came. He cleared it in 10 of 17 games.

The season was five games

5 of his 17 games produced 25 or more points: Week 4 against GB (33.4), Week 6 against CAR (31.8), Week 11 against LV (29.4), Week 12 against PHI (29.6), Week 16 against LAC (26). Strip them and the remaining 12 games average 11.8.

That is not a criticism. Spike weeks win fantasy games and a player who produces them is more valuable than one who never does. But it changes what you are buying: he is a ceiling play with real weeks off, not a floor play. 4 games came in under 10 points, including Week 1 against PHI (6) and Week 14 against DET (8.7).

The three largest overshoots — Week 4 (+14.6), Week 12 (+14.2), Week 6 (+13) — are the same games. The spikes were not extra volume. They were finishing.

Four seasons, actual against expected. Two of the four came in meaningfully above what the volume justified.

2 of his 4 seasons are flagged as running hot: 2022 (+16%) and 2025 (+24.8%). Across the four he has scored 90.9 points more than his usage was worth.

The reflexive read is regression. Finishing above expectation is unstable, and a player who does it repeatedly is usually one whose luck has not run out yet.

But an expected-points model has a specific blind spot, and it is worth naming: it converts usage at league-average rates. A target twenty yards downfield is worth what the average receiver does with a target twenty yards downfield. If a player is reliably better than average at winning a particular kind of target, he will beat the model every single year, and calling that luck is just mislabelling a skill.

So the question is not whether he beat the number. It is whether there is a mechanism.

There is a mechanism, and it is man coverage

What he does against each coverage, 448 targets over four seasons. Cover 1 is single-high man — the look he sees most and punishes hardest. Cover 0 and Cover 6 are the two he cannot solve.

Across 448 targets and four seasons, he has been a fundamentally different receiver depending on what the defence played. Against man he has caught 57.5% for 10.35 yards per target and 0.556 expected points added per target. Against zone: 65.6%, 9.47 yards, 0.323 EPA.

That is a gap of 0.233 EPA per target on a sample of 200 man targets against 247 zone. The catch rate goes the other way — he catches more against zone — which is exactly what you would expect from a receiver whose value is in winning contested downfield throws rather than in finding soft spots underneath.

The shell detail sharpens it. Cover 1, single-high man is the look he has faced most: 149 targets, 12.27 yards per target, 0.771 EPA. That is his best number against his largest sample, which is the opposite of a fluke.

The weakness is specific. Against Cover 6 he has caught 50% for 6.11 yards a target and -0.532 EPA across 18 looks — a gap of 1.3 expected points a target between his best coverage and his worst.

This does not prove the overshoot repeats. It does mean the pattern has a stated cause rather than being a coin that keeps landing heads.

The market has been wrong about him in one direction

Across 58 graded prop lines, he has gone over 62.1% of the time. On receiving yards specifically the number is 71.4% across 28 lines, beating the posted number by an average of 27.3%.

A projection model can be wrong about conversion. A book adjusting weekly, with money on the other side, being wrong 71% of the time on the same market is a harder thing to explain away.

Touchdowns are the control. His anytime-TD market implied a 38.6% rate and he converted at 39.3% — a gap of 0.7 points, which is noise.

So the risk is not efficiency. It is targets.

Dallas returns 6 of 6 continuity slots: Dak Prescott at quarterback, Brian Schottenheimer as head coach, Klayton Adams calling it, and the same lead back, WR1 and tight end. The offence projects to 35.75 pass attempts a game at high confidence, anchored to what it actually threw last year.

The pie is stable. His slice is the question. Our share model has him at 21.4% against the 23.9% he ran, with a range of 19.5% to 22.7%. CeeDee Lamb projects at 22.7% — for the first time the two of them are projected within a point and a half of each other.

That number is built from 29 comparable players — same age band, same prior share, same team, same coordinator — not from a depth chart. The closest three went Amari Cooper 23.4% to 18.7%, Brandon Aiyuk 22.1% to 22.2%, DeVonta Smith 24.7% to 26.1%. Two held, one fell hard.

Our board has him at 233.9 points, 14.3 per game across 16.4 expected games — 76.6 catches, 1153 yards, 7 touchdowns. That is WR2, 23 overall, and 77 points of value over a replacement starter.

It is a step down from 2025, and the reason is volume rather than efficiency. The projection assumes he keeps doing what he does on slightly fewer looks.

What we have been saying about him

went from a low-volume Pittsburgh passing attack to a high-volume Dallas offense, exactly the profile that made him last year's value bet, and it hit immediately (career- high catch rate, career-high yards/reception in year one). Contingent upside remains enormous if Lamb ever missed time — top-5 weekly option in those weeks even with Lamb healthy the rest of the year, because there's so little other systemic risk in Dallas's passing game.

Where to draft him

He goes at 24 overall on consensus, and the market is unusually tight on him — a spread of just 5.7 picks between his cheapest and priciest platform. He is latest on espn and earliest on yahoo: sleeper 23.1, espn 28.1, yahoo 22.4, underdog 23.5, cbs 22.6.

At 24 you are paying a WR2 price for a player whose median outcome is a WR2 season with five weeks that win you the game outright and four that lose it. The bust rate of 23% is real and so is the 30% boom rate.

The call: fair value, not a discount. The reason to take him is the ceiling and the betting record. The reason to pass is that you are buying a profile that has beaten its expected output four years running and only needs to stop once.
