Who benefits when a fantasy football player gets injured?
The standard analysis after an injury sprays the vacated target or carry share across the remaining depth chart, producing several modest upgrades.
Absence value concentrates rather than distributes, and the degree is positional. At running back the top beneficiary captures a median 81.8% of the total gain, clearing 60% in 83.8% of cases. At tight end it is 96.0%. At wide receiver it is only 63.2%, and the top man clears 60% in barely half of cases. That gap is the structural reason handcuffing works at running back and tight end and mostly does not at receiver.

Running back touches funnel to one replacement because there is usually one back taking the early-down work. Tight end concentrates harder still, because most offences roster one receiving tight end and no real second. Receiver targets disperse across a room of three or four players who are all already running routes, so the vacated share splits.
The whole game is identifying which one — and it is the player whose usage indicators were already rising, not the biggest name on the depth chart.
Absence events identified at the spell level from the injury database, with the scoring gain of every team-mate measured against his own pre-absence baseline, then the share captured by the single largest beneficiary. Quarterback is reported as too few events rather than given a number.

Tight end rests on 54 events and running back on 74, which is enough to establish the pattern and not enough to price an individual pair. The per-pair table reports its own n for exactly that reason — where there is no historical observation of a specific starter-out, backup-in pair, it says so rather than inventing one.
