There is no volume-versus-upside tradeoff — except at quarterback

Across 17,000+ scored player-stretches, the ceiling factors and the floor factors are the same list. At QB the relationship reverses.

Is there a floor-versus-ceiling tradeoff in fantasy football?

What the field generally says

“Safe floor, no ceiling” is a standard draft-room framing: consistent producers are assumed to give up upside, and high-ceiling players are assumed to carry volatility.

What we measured

In 17,000+ scored player-stretches the tradeoff does not exist at RB, WR or TE. Volume raises the ceiling and the floor at the same time. Boom rate and bust rate are strongly negatively correlated — −0.65 at RB, −0.72 at WR, −0.59 at TE — so the players who boom often are the same players who bust rarely. At quarterback the sign flips positive at +0.356.

Why it comes out that way

What actually creates fragility is not upside, it is dependence on touchdowns and efficiency. Profiles scoring on a high yards-per-target or an inflated catch rate bust at elevated rates when the efficiency normalizes. Quarterback differs because ceiling there is produced substantially by rushing and by variance-heavy passing volume, which do carry a floor cost.

Where upside actually lives

Not in a personality trait. A flex-scoring wide receiver on a 5–9 PPG baseline boomed in 24.7% of his next-month windows against 10.8% for established studs. At running back the same shape: 26.6% in the flex band against 9.6% for studs. Bust rates barely differ between the groups. Upside is a low baseline plus a real role — the stud is already priced at his level and has no room to double.

If you are paying a volatility tax for a high-ceiling receiver, you are paying for a risk that does not exist.

Boom and bust rates computed over next-month scoring windows for qualifying player-stretches, split by position and by baseline scoring band.

What this does not say

The positional reversal at quarterback is the exception that matters, and it is real rather than noise — the same reversal appears on week-to-week volatility against boom rate. Do not carry the RB/WR/TE conclusion into a superflex quarterback decision.
