Season-long strength of schedule is dead. Weekly game script is not

Two claims wear the same jersey and only one survives. Preseason schedule strength fails; being favoured moves real production.

Does strength of schedule matter in fantasy football?

What the field generally says

Preseason strength-of-schedule rankings are a fixture of draft content, and game-script reasoning is used interchangeably with them.

What we measured

They are different claims with different verdicts. Planning a season around upcoming schedule strength does not survive testing. Weekly game script does: what a team is expected to do in a specific game moves production in measurable and position-dependent ways.

Why it comes out that way

A preseason schedule is a forecast of defenses that have not played yet, built on last season’s identities, and defensive quality is among the least stable team properties year to year. A weekly spread and total, by contrast, is a live forecast of the specific game about to be played.

How it was tested

Tested separately: whether preseason schedule strength predicts season outcomes, and whether in-game expectation — spread and implied total — moves player production at the week level.

What this does not say

Team implied total is context and a tiebreaker, not a multiplier. Players in top-quartile scoring environments average roughly 2 PPG more than those in bottom-quartile environments, which is meaningful across a season and small on any given Sunday.
